Because we specialize in pediatric dental care, we understand that every patient is unique. The Tooth Booth Pediatric Dentistry team members are professionally trained to accommodate all your child’s needs. We are trained and certified in CPR, BLS, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
Some children experience a large degree of anxiety while in the dental chair. As a result, they cannot feel comfortable or sit still during dental treatment. Dr. Lam does not want to further upset these children and cause them bodily or emotional harm.
For these children, Dr. Lam may suggest the use of a technique called sedation, which according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists (AAPD) will help guide your child’s behavior during dental treatment. Medications, or pharmacological agents, can be used to help your child cooperate during dental treatment as well as reduce anxiety and discomfort. Unlike general anesthesia, sedation will not make your child unconscious—just more relaxed and drowsy.
This method is used to ensure your child’s safety and prevent injury from excessive movements. It also prevents the association of dental care with any negative connotations. Various medications can be used but are selected based on your child’s overall health, weight and level of anxiety. Please note that all medications are measured and administered by Dr. Lam to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of the medication as well as to ensure the safety of the patient.
Sedation is generally safe but risks still do apply. Please discuss this option with Dr. Lam and always voice your questions or concerns so that he may address any issues prior to the procedure. Please inform Dr. Lam of any allergies to medication and any prescribed, herbal or over-the-counter medications that your child may be taking. We do ask that you follow all instructions provided by Dr. Lam prior to and after the procedure.
As always the Tooth Booth Pediatric Dentistry team encourages questions from parents and our young patients. Please let us know and we will be happy to address any concerns.
